The February event co-sponsored by Chick-Fil-A is called "The Art of Marriage," and it's intended to be a launching point for Pennsylvania to return to "the biblical definition of marriage." Given the work of the Pennsylvania Family Institute, it's hard not to see where this event is going to go -- straight for the jugular of anyone who supports marriage equality for same-sex couples.
Ah yes, the Biblical definition of marriage between one man and 2000 women. I am sure that is the definition they are talking about. How does a business that promotes hatred and bigotry stay in business? Is it not enough that they only hire Christians, which is discrimination (and should be punished by the government, but they are too scared to take on a religious company). Now they are just coming out and saying that they hate gay people.
I wonder why they don’t ask for sexual orientation and religion when you go through the drive-thru? Oh right, because they need the money of their customers to fuel anti-gay hate groups like the Pennsylvania “Family” Group. Think about that the next time you hit up Chick-Fil-A and think that it will all be OK.
I do not eat at Chick-Fil-A. I don’t eat meat and the rest of their food sucks. Many people do, though. I think everyone should keep this story in the back of their mind the next time they want a chicken sandwich. The money you spend on your food is going to contribute to hatred and discrimination.
But I am sure that the customers of Chick-Fil-A are OK with that.
James’ remarks were made in response to County Commissioner Chair Jennifer Roberts’ request to send a letter thanking some members of the Charlotte-area congressional delegation for their “yes” votes on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) repeal this month. Roberts was to send the letter to U.S. Reps. Larry Kissell and Mel Watt and U.S. Sens. Richard Burr and Kay Hagan. President Barack Obama last week signed the repeal act into law.
This guy is beyond repulsive, and I am not just talking about his resemblance to a hybrid of the guy from Mask and Porky Pig. So to get the personal attacks out of the way, No, Bill James. “Homosexuals are sexual predators,” James wrote in one email from a string of several between county board members, Roberts and County Manager Harry Jones, and provided by James to qnotes. “Allowing homosexuals to serve in the US military with the endorsement of the Mecklenburg County Commission ignores a host of serious problems related to maintaining US military readiness and effectiveness not the least of which is the current Democrat plan to allow homosexuals (male and female) to share showers with those they are attracted to.”
OK, from the comments you can guess that this philistine has never served in the military. Had he served in the military, he would know that there have always been gay people in the military. The military is one of the gayest organizations I have ever been involved with. Men are showering with other men as we speak and not engaging in a rape fest. The repeal of DADT is going to go ahead with or without the OK of the Mecklenburg County Commission. I think one of the serious problems with the military is assholes like Bill James acting like they know anything about the military.
James’ anti-gay comments following the Christmas holiday are not the first time the public official has spoken out strongly on LGBT issues. He often uses derogatory language or slurs to describe LGBT people in debates or communication with fellow public officials and constituents. During debate last December on domestic partner benefits for county employees, James leaned over to his Democratic colleague, Vilma Leake, and called her son a “homo.” Leake’s son died from AIDS in the 1990s.
I can only guess that the good people of District 6 are as hate filled and backwards as Bill James because they keep voting this guy into office. Maybe I should start taking bets on how long before we find Bill James balls-deep in some male prostitutes ass.
"Now, you could even argue whether being a Muslim is actually a religion, or is it a nationality, way of life, cult whatever you want to call it," Ramsey said. "Now certainly we do protect our religions, but at the same time this is something we are going to have to face."
The idiocy spewing out of Tennessee is undoubtedly the result of the plan to build a Muslim community center in Murfreesboro, TN. The town already has a mosque, so the issue revolves around the community center.
"Now, you know, I'm all about freedom of religion. I value the First Amendment as much as I value the Second Amendment as much as I value the Tenth Amendment and on and on and on," he said. "But you cross the line when they try to start bringing Sharia Law here to the state of Tennessee -- to the United States. We live under our Constitution and they live under our Constitution."
You know, I actually agree with the Lt. Gov. here. If Muslims are trying to impose Sharia Law onto anyone living in the US, then they should themselves be jailed for trying to subvert the Constitution. The same goes for any Christian or Jewish group that would attempt to impose the Ten Commandments as the law of the land. So yes, if that were happening, I would support the Lt. Gov. in his fight against Sharia Law.
One problem with this is that there is no indication that this community center is going to become the seat of the Great Sharia Court of Murfreesboro, TN. The First Amendment allows anyone to practice their religion. That freedom stops (supposedly) when it begins to interfere with the constitutional rights of others. Just as Christians are allowed to practice their particular brand of bullshit, so are Muslims, Hindus, Jews, etc.
Another problem is that the First Amendment actually does apply to cults. Look at Scientology, the Mormons, Wiccans, Satanists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc. All are allowed to practice freely in this country.
I do not agree with any religion. I think the world would be a better place without the existence of narrow-minded bigots that seem to fill the pews on Sundays, the prayer rugs on Fridays, and the Temples on Saturdays. However, the First Amendment allows for freedom of religion. Just because you don’t agree with someones invisible god doesn’t mean you can stop them from worshiping said invisible sky daddy. If anyone is willing to say Muslims can’t build their community centers where they please, just like every other religion is allowed, then be prepared for your religion, or lack of religion, to be next.
Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, TN has banned a coach and a team from the church softball league because the coach is a lesbian. This is stupid, ridiculous, and bigoted. However, I have to stand by the church's decision because it is their right to do so. Unless this church is receiving public funding, it is their right to discriminate against whomever they choose.
I do think they should loose their tax-exempt status. If they want to be in the business of discriminating against gay people because it is part of their religion, then they should pay taxes like the rest of us.
Don't get me wrong, I think the church is despicable. It is amazing to me that churches can do stuff like this and be surprised when their numbers dwindle (something I love to see). Especially speaking as someone who is bi-sexual, I don't want anyone to be discriminated against for any reason.
I think the proper response here is scorn and sanction, picketing this church every day until the doors close. Let's bring the free market to the church.
The Supreme Court is going to be hearing a case this week, Christian Legal Society Chapter v. Martinez, that has some pretty hefty implications for college groups across the nation. The Christian Legal Society is arguing that the policy of non-discrimination when it comes to admitting groups on the University of California, Hastings College Of The Law campus is unconstitutional because it doesn't allow the groups to bar people from joining them based on religious or sexual orientation reasons.
Who would have thought that it would have been a Christian group that wanted to discriminate against gays and atheists? I mean, it isn't like religion has a long history of openness and acceptance. But I digress.
In this particular case, as much as it pains me to say, I have to agree with the Christian group. The implications of this case reach a little further, a lot further, than just not discriminating against someone who wants to join your club. For example, if there was an atheist group that was not allowed to discriminate against religious people, a christian group could effectively pile the group with Christians, take all of the officer positions, and shut the group down. Easy peasy.
The sticking point is going to be that a group that operates on the campus actually receives funding from the state university system.
Official recognition brings the right to use the Hastings name and logo, access to an e-mail address with a link to the law school's network, office space and meeting rooms, and small grants from student-activity fees and university funds.
That is where you have to draw the line, for religious, atheist, gay, or white-supremacists groups. You shouldn't stop anyone from forming a group. Ever. But, if the group is based on something that does not correlate to education at the school, then there should be no help at all from the university system. This is not to say that you couldn't have a "LGBT Rights" group on the campus of Hastings that received funding from the state. That is an issue that attracts straight people and the LGBT community alike. There could also be a "Religious Freedom" group that received benefits. However, when you have a specifically Christian or Muslim or Jewish or, yes, Atheist group, then there should be no funding from the state system.
Besides, having the Christian group take a stand like this is fantastic. I love it when I can easily pick out a group of bigoted idiots.
